How to Delete an Old macOS Installer and Free Up Space on Mac
Quick answer: if macOS is already installed and you do not need an offline copy, move the old Install macOS … .app from Applications to the Trash and empty it. A current installer can use 12 GB or more, so this is a useful win on a nearly full Mac.
What is a macOS installer?
When you download macOS from Software Update or the App Store, macOS may leave an installer application in your Applications folder. It is separate from the operating system currently running on your Mac. Its job is to start an installation or create a bootable installer; it is not required to keep macOS working after an upgrade completes.
Common names include Install macOS Sequoia.app, Install macOS Sonoma.app, Install macOS Mojave.app, and Install macOS Ventura.app. Do not confuse this app with the macOS system folders on your startup disk.
Before you delete it: decide whether to keep a copy
Deleting an old installer is safe for most people. Keep it instead if you expect to reinstall macOS without downloading it again, support several compatible Macs, or plan to make a bootable installer. Apple documents how installers can be used to create bootable media.
/System, or anything you are unsure about in Disk Utility. This guide is only about the installer application in Applications. How to find and delete the installer
- Open Finder and choose Applications from the sidebar.
- Search for
Install macOSor sort by name. Check that the item is an application, not your disk or system folder. - Optional: select it and choose File > Get Info to confirm how much space it uses.
- Drag the installer app to the Trash, then empty the Trash when you are certain you do not need it.
- Open System Settings > General > Storage after a moment to confirm the recovered space.
If the installer launches instead of moving, quit it first. If Finder says an item is in use, restart your Mac and try again before using Terminal commands.
Why the installer came back
It can reappear after downloading a newer macOS version or starting an upgrade. This is normal. You do not need to keep every historical installer; retain only the one you deliberately want for offline installation.
Need more space than one installer can free?
An installer is one of the easiest large files to remove, but caches, old iPhone backups, duplicate downloads, and developer files can take far more space. See our guides to free up space on Mac and check what is using storage before deleting personal files.
