How to Delete Steam Games on Mac and Free Up Storage

Quick answer: in Steam, open Library, Control-click the game, choose Manage → Uninstall, and confirm. A modern game can free tens of gigabytes immediately. Empty Trash only if you manually remove leftover files.

Uninstall a Steam game the safe way

  1. Open Steam and select Library.
  2. Control-click the game you no longer play.
  3. Choose Manage, then Uninstall.
  4. Confirm, and wait for Steam to finish removing the game.

Your save files may be kept separately or synced with Steam Cloud. Check the game’s own documentation before deleting saves.

Find leftover Steam data

Steam games normally live under ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common. If a game is gone but storage did not change, look for old libraries in Steam’s Settings → Storage screen and on external volumes. Do not delete the entire Steam folder if you still use Steam; it can contain installed games, workshop content, and configuration.

Recover more space from large files

Game downloads are only one source of storage pressure. Old installers, duplicate downloads, app caches, and iPhone backups can add up quickly. Use macOS Storage to see categories, then review large files before removing anything.

Frequently asked questions

Does uninstalling Steam delete my account?

No. Uninstalling a game removes local files. Your Steam account, purchases, and cloud data remain.

Can I delete Steam game folders manually?

Use Steam’s Uninstall command first. Manual deletion can leave metadata behind and makes it easier to remove the wrong library.

Why did I not get all the space back?

Workshop files, shader caches, screenshots, and another Steam library may remain. Review those locations carefully before deleting them.
