How Much Free Space Should a Mac Have?
A good target is to keep 10–20% of your Mac's startup disk free. For most people, that means at least 25 GB on a 256 GB Mac, 50 GB on a 512 GB Mac, or 100 GB on a 1 TB Mac.

These are practical buffers, not space that macOS permanently reserves. A large video editor, developer, or gamer may need more because their apps create substantial temporary files. Someone who mainly browses and writes documents may be comfortable near the lower target.
Why a Mac needs free storage

When physical memory fills, macOS moves some inactive data into swap files on the SSD. With almost no disk space left, the system has less room to do this and apps can become less responsive.
Updates need temporary working space
A macOS update needs more room than the installer size shown in System Settings. The update must download, expand, prepare snapshots, and replace system files. Keeping a healthy buffer avoids clearing space in a hurry just before an important update.
Apps continuously create temporary data
Browsers, photo editors, development tools, messaging apps, and streaming services all create caches. Some caches are useful and should not be deleted constantly, but they need room to grow during normal use.
What happens when storage gets too low?
You may see a “startup disk is almost full” warning, failed downloads, updates that refuse to install, apps unable to save files, or unusually slow performance. Low storage is not the only cause of a slow Mac, but checking it is an easy first step.

- Uninstall unused applications completely. Review related support files instead of blindly deleting the entire Library folder.
- Delete true duplicates. Compare file contents, not only filenames, before removing copies.
- Review old backups and developer files. iPhone backups, Xcode Derived Data, Docker data, and package-manager caches can grow very large.
- Empty Trash. Space is not reclaimed until trashed files are removed.

Is 20 GB of free space enough on a Mac?
It may be enough for light everyday use, especially on a 128 GB Mac, but it leaves little room for major updates or large temporary files. On a 256 GB or larger Mac, aim for at least 10% free.
Does more free space always make a Mac faster?
No. Once macOS has adequate working space, deleting more files does not automatically improve CPU or memory performance. Persistent slowness may instead come from high CPU usage, insufficient memory, startup items, or a failing process.
Should I keep exactly 20% free?
